HyDragon; Basic engine concept HyDragon targets to develop highly efficient and affordable energy solutions based on methanol as an environmentally benign fuel.

The specific research objective is to demonstrate increased energy efficiency by using a modern Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) converted to Methanol and Methanol reformed to Hydrogen and CO in a reformer. The energy required for the reforming process will be derived from the exhaust.

In addition, advanced Waste Heat Recovery systems will be applied in order to extract and convert excess heat from the engine into useful energy.

If proven successful the energy efficiency should raise from typically 40% as in a modern diesel engine and up to 50 – 60%.

The target is also to demonstrate that such engine solution may meet the most stringent European and North American emission targets, such as ULEV or even SULEV.
